Ceramics
Iona Stock is a ceramic artist and teacher, creating highly decorated hand thrown functional porcelain ware that bring joy to the everyday. These pieces are decorated with manganese oxide, cobalt oxide and china clay creating a slip which Iona uses to decorate the painterly, illustrative designs from plein air drawings of the rural location of her studio. Fine details are then added using a sgraffito technique giving each piece a unique and exacting finish, the joy and peacefulness of place is transferred into the pieces though the highly intensive making process.
Iona is also interested in bright bold colours and textures found within macro details of trees and nature, creating pieces which are both functional and sculptural exploring her love of ceramics as a medium. She brings joy to the quotidian allowing customers to bring a piece of her happiness home.
All her work embodies the feeling of groundedness with some earthy tones, making pieces intended for use. After collecting and using ceramics pieces for her whole life, Iona believes that a part of the potter is instilled into the pieces in the creation of beautifully made functional ceramics This is where her love for functional pieces stems from.
Iona grew up in Farndale (North Yorkshire) where she first became interested in clay moulding and creating fairy homes in the clay bank of their pond.
Iona went to Botton Village Steiner school which nurtured the arts as much as traditional academic subjects, then moving to Nawton. Iona then went onto York College studying 3D Design Crafts and then onto Sunderland University receiving a first in BA Glass and Ceramics. Graduating in 2020 Iona set up her home studio.
